Can Scoliosis Be Prevented?

Scoliosis can be a difficult condition and cause both physical pain and emotional suffering. The sideways bending of the spine may begin with abnormal posture and it can end in deformity. If not treated it can progress and effect your heart, lungs and many other organs. The good news is that there can be help for people that suffer with scoliosis.

Scoliosis can occur from age 8 – 18 and occurs more often in females. Some people are born with this spinal condition. Others get it from bad posture, carrying backpacks, uneven leg length and different injuries. In many cases the cause is unknown. This is called Idiopathic Scoliosis.

In the early stages of child development an alert parent may notice that one shoulder is higher than the other, the head is slightly off center and clothes do not hang properly. Back and leg pain may develop but are often overlooked as merely “growing pains.” Early detection is critical and neglect is the biggest danger with scoliosis. If allowed to advance, it can steadily worsen and severe cases may involve surgery. This procedure implants steel rods to the spine to force it to straighten.

Chiropractic care has helped many avoid the unhappy effect of scoliosis. The procedure is simple. First, a thorough examination helps detect scoliosis in its’ early stage. Then, corrective action can begin at once. At Chait Chiropractic Center the primary course of care is a program of specific chiropractic adjustments, exercise and traction. These help improve the function and structure of the spine. Muscles strengthen. Posture can improve.
