Don’t Just Sit There!

Does your desk  job cause you to suffer from lower back pain? If so, you are not the only one who has to deal with this problem!  More than 80% of people report that having lower back pain is due to sitting at their computer for extended periods. Individuals who don’t move a lot become inflexible and susceptible to back pain. This pain can be aggravated by simple movements such as reaching for a coffee cup or bending over to tie your shoe. When we move around, discs between the vertebrae expand and contract like sponges, soaking up fresh blood and nutrients. When

Is Sitting Causing Your Chronic Back Pain?

We all know that too much sitting is not good for you. What many people don’t realize is that sitting has become the new smoking as far as it’s impact on your health. Our bodies are meant to have movement to increase circulation, help our range of motion and keep muscles strong. Sitting over long periods of time can lead to chronic aches and pains caused by misalignments in the spine and posture, which may worsen over time. 64% of all low back pain in this country is caused by too much sitting. Chiropractic care can help alleviate not only

Symptoms of Forward Head Posture

A human head weighs between 8 and 10 pounds on average. With correct posture, your head doesn’t feel like it weighs much at all because it is perfectly balanced and positioned. When Forward Head Posture  begins to develop and your head begins to move forward away from its balanced position, the weight of your head begins to increase. In fact for every inch your head moves forward, the relative weight of the head doubles due to the effects of gravity.  Some of the common symptoms of forward head posture include: Chronic pain (neck, shoulders, upper, lower and middle back) Temporomandibular joint

Have You Heard About Forward Head Posture And Text Neck?

Did you know that as your head is misaligned forward from your shoulders, the heavier the weight of your head becomes?  At 0 degrees of forward head position, your head weighs about 10-12 pounds?  The further forward your head flexes from your shoulders, the heavier the head becomes.  By 30 degrees of head flexion, your head weighs 40 pounds. By the time your head is at 60 degrees, it weighs about 60 pounds.  This is like holding a small child on your shoulders! The more your head moves forward, it shifts the center of the gravity. This causes the upper spine

Sitting is the new smoking!

Did you know that most people sit about 11 hours on average per day?  We sit at mealtime, in the car, in meetings, at our PC, both at work and home, watching television, and then it is time for bed. It all adds up to muscle weakness, where the body cannot hold up the posture properly. This may lead to sitting forward with poor posture and a rounded spine.  This posture is commonly referred to as the “computer slump.”  Although the human spine is a versatile and magnificent structure, after a few decades of “computer slump”, the muscles finally run

Back Pack Safety!

It is that time of year again – Back to School!  Have you seen how heavy some of the backpacks are that the kids are carrying around the school yard? Backpacks come in all  shapes, colors and sizes. They help kids of all ages express their own personal sense of style and when used properly, they are incredibly handy. The problem is that poor-positioning and over weight backpacks can drastically change the posture.  As practical as backpacks are, they can strain muscles and joints and may cause back pain if they’re too heavy or  used incorrectly. Some helpful hints:  Choose backpacks with

Don’t Get Old Before Your Time!

It is easier to observe “poor” posture in others because we are unlikely to be aware of our own habitual body positions.  When you see someone bent over with severely rounded shoulders, or with one shoulder higher than the other, you are probably observing a condition that has developed over a period of years.  Postural problems can be due to hereditary or can be disease related, but most often they are habitual in nature. Identifying the factors that contribute to these postural imbalances may help you see which areas need to be addressed and changed.  Be aware of occupational influences,

Is your posture causing you problems?

When most people hear the term posture, they recall being told to stand or sit up straight by their mother or teachers since they were kids. Posture comes from the Latin word ponere, meaning to place.  It’s defined as the position of the body or a way of holding the body. The important thing to realize about postural problems is that they can lessen the quality of your life as you age. Your posture affects you more than you may realize. Since all of your soft tissue is interconnected (muscles, tendons, ligaments, and connective tissue.), a problem in one area of your

are you lifting properly?

“Lift with your legs, not with your back” is a phrase commonly used when discussing the body mechanics of lifting.  Lifting with your legs means you are using the power of your lower body to lift the weight.  Instead of bending from your back and putting strain on your spine and upper body, bend from your hip joints and knees, and use the power of your legs. When lifting, it is very important that you get as close to the weight as possible, without losing your own stability.  When you stand away from the weight, your back must bend and

Don’t Just sit there!

Sitting is believed to cause the majority of back pain in this country. 54% of back pain is caused from sitting, as opposed to standing.  This is due to the fact that people tend to sit in a slouched or slumped position for hours at a time, increasing the pressure on their lower back.  Overall there is an increased risk of pain and stress to the lower and upper  back as well as the neck. Sitting with your upper body vertically balanced over your pelvis allows your low back to maintain its lumbar curve, which will decrease the pressure from flexing

Body Mechanics and Massage Therapy

The way you use your body will influence your physical health. Whether you are sitting or standing; pushing or pulling; or lifting and holding something. For instance, just keeping a wallet in your back pocket can misalign your spine because of the way it changes your body mechanics when you sit. Body positions are so important to your health. A perfect example is the strain that you put on your back, neck and shoulders when you look down when standing. The next time you are doing dishes, try to look straight ahead instead of down and see what a difference

Have You Looked At Your Posture Lately?

Body awareness is where it all starts.  Without it, we blindly go through our day not realizing how our movements, responses, sensations and feelings affect our health. Body awareness is a mindfulness of your body’s movements, responses, sensations or consciousness of your body.   It is when you become aware of subtle patterns, for example, the position of your shoulders while you read, or the shifting of your weight when you stand. Once you become aware of your body and your habits of movement, you can begin to discover which movement habits serve you and which ones hinder and cause you discomfort,

What’s Your Standing Posture Telling You?

Standing is a basic and foundational position from which all other body mechanics are performed.  Your body must continue to move or “sway” in varying degrees in order to keep itself in balance….so don’t fight it’s natural movement. Trying to stand “straight” takes your skeleton out of its natural alignment, requiring your muscles to work very hard to hold a straight posture.  The next time you feel yourself trying to stand “straight”, relax and allow the natural shape of your skeleton to support you. Whether you stand with your feet parallel to each other or with one foot forward, your

Is sitting at your desk damaging your back?

How many hours a day do you spend sitting versus standing? How many hours does your child spend sitting? If you sit, drive or watch TV for more than 2 hours a day you could be at risk for back pain. Sitting can put up to 2 times the stress on the spine as standing does. Slouching when sitting, increases that pressure even more. Movement is important throughout the day as disks in the spine act as shock absorbers in the body.  If the body remains still, these disks do not receive the proper nutrition they need which may lead to tightness and pain.

Did You Know That All Spines Are Different?

Just as no two people are alike, no two spines are alike! In fact, spines can vary greatly from one to the another. For example, although anatomists tell us that there are five lumbar (lower back) vertebrae, some people have four and others have six! Similar variations occur with the number of thoracic (mid back) and cervical (neck) vertebrae. There are also many variations in the spine’s shape, curve, muscles, ligaments, nerve and blood supply. Thus our spines are as unique as our faces. Although many spinal variations are congenital ( we are born with them.) others are acquired through

Stand Up Straight!!!

“Stand up straight!” is probably what your mother used to say to you when you were young. While the intention of encouraging proper posture is good, our spines are actually not supposed to be straight looking at it from the side. Your spine has natural curves that form an elongated S-shape from the side. The spinal curves work like a spring to absorb shock, maintain balance, and to facilitate the full range of motion throughout the spinal column. Maintaining your spine’s shape depends on proper posture. The shape of the spine and posture indicates the health of the spine. Obtaining

Massage and Chiropractic Care Support Each Other

There are many benefits to adding therapeutic massage therapy to your chiropractic treatment plan to help with chronic pain. Massage can help decrease pain, increase the speed of recovery and help you stay in alignment after a chiropractic adjustment. Massage also helps chiropractic care by acting like a “warm-up” for the body prior to the adjustment. Adjustments can last longer when muscle tension is released since tight muscles pull joints out of alignment. It is like a circle in which chiropractic adjustments address misalignments which gives immediate relief to the soft tissue and massage helps soft tissue heal quicker once

Strength Training and Regular Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic works best when the patient takes charge of their own health care. Part of that responsibility includes a reasonably consistent routine of strengthening and stretching in addition to cardiovascular exercise and proper nutrition. While aerobic exercise, such as walking, running or swimming, has many excellent health benefits it does not make your muscles strong. Strength training does. By strength training with weights you’re using your muscles to work against the extra pounds, called resistance. This strengthens and increases the amount of muscle mass in your body by making your muscles work harder than they are used to. Can Age-Related Diseases Be Prevented?

Aging is a natural process that does not happen all at once but occurs as an individual goes through life. As we mature in age, we are prone to change our posture. Some common causes that attribute to this are: trauma, computer ergonomics, backpacks, mobile devices, television and even the way we sleep! When a person is not positioned correctly, they are at a greater risk for developing postural abnormalities that can negatively impact their activities of daily living as well as other bodily functions and mobility. The best ways to keep your body in its optimal shape is usually

The Importance of an Upper Cervical Adjustment

When most people think of chiropractic adjustments, they think of back or neck pain. The chiropractic approach is based on the principle that the body has a natural ability to heal itself. This natural healing is initiated and controlled by the nervous system. These nerve impulses flow down from the brain to your spinal cord and out through spinal nerves to your muscles, tendons, ligaments and vital organs. Interference within the nervous system due to spinal joint misalignment leads to pain, symptoms and possibly loss of function. The upper cervical adjustment is an adjustment on the top of the neck.

Is There A Correct Way To Wear A Backpack?

One of the essential pieces of any back to school ensemble is, of course, the backpack. Although they’re practical, backpacks are a leading cause of back and shoulder pain for millions of children and adolescents. With books in tow, backpacks can weigh up top an alarming 30-40 pounds! This forces the head into a forward head posture to counter balance the weight resulting in abnormal stress on the joints, discs and nerves of the neck, shoulders and low back. The American Chiropractic Association recommends that parents help children pack their backpacks properly, and they should make sure children never carry

Why Is The Spine Shaped The Way It Is?

The central nervous system is made up of the brain, spinal cord and is protected by 24 movable bones called vertebrae. Coming out of the spinal cord is a network of nerves which then travel through spaces between the adjacent vertebrae to control and communicate with all muscles, blood vessels, organs and other tissues of the body. When two adjacent vertebrae become misaligned, the space between the vertebrae becomes constricted causing a decrease in the electrical impulses that flow through the nerve due to the vertebral misalignment. The 24 moveable bones in the spinal column are divided into three sections

Do I Have a Pinched Nerve?

A pinched nerve is actually rare. It is more likely that a spinal bone will misalign and irritate, stretch, rub or chaff a nearby nerve root. These “subluxations” may distort the critical nerve messages to and from the brain. Because the nerves control and coordinate the functions of the muscles and internal organs, pinched nerves can lead to other health problems. Some of the symptoms of Subluxations are: •Neck pain • Headaches •Spinal pain •Mid or lower back pain •Shoulder pain •Pain radiating down their arm or leg •Numbness, tingling, or burning sensation in the arms, legs, or even toes

Can I Adjust Myself?

The short answer is No. Some people may be able to make their joints “pop,” but that is not an adjustment! Manipulating vertebrae that are already too mobile doesn’t do a thing for the pressure on your nerves caused by Subluxation and in fact may do damage to the joints and the spinal curves. However the vertebrae that are fixated or jammed (hypomobile) aren’t affected by “self-adjustment” demonstrations. Unfortunately, these are the ones that are in need of the adjustment. So yes, it is possible to “crack” yourself but as a rule it is not possible to give yourself an

Man Vs. Computer ~ Is Your PC Winning?

Here are some Great Ergonomic Keyboard/Mouse Tips to make sure your PC does not win the battle! The keyboard should be placed just above the level of your lap. This is lower than most people normally place their keyboard. Let your arms tilt downward while using the keyboard and leave your elbows at a comfortable “open” angle. If you don’t have an adjustable keyboard tray, you may need to accomplish this by adjusting your chair height. Using a slightly negative keyboard tilt will help you keep your wrists in the proper (neutral) postion. Try to avoid positive keyboard tilt (i.e.,

Should Spinal Manipulation Be Used to Treat Acid Reflux?

While diet, stress, smoking, caffeine intake, and certain drugs all contribute to acid reflux recent studies suggest that lumbar kyphosis – or the abnormal curvature of the spine – combined with back muscle weakness, can have a “significant effect” on the presence of the disease. Furthermore, increased thoracic–mid back- curvature called hyper-kyphosis has also been found to cause and / or contribute to the signs and symptoms of acid reflux. Have you ever slept on your arm or sat on your leg ? When you stood up your leg or hand was tingling and it felt all tingly or stopped

Can Joint Disease be Prevented?

Joint disease is one of the oldest, and most common types of arthritis. It is characterized by the breakdown of the joint’s cartilage. Cartilage is the part of the joint that cushions the ends of bones. Cartilage breakdown causes bones to rub against each other, causing pain and loss of movement. Most commonly affecting middle-aged and older people, osteoarthritis can range from very mild to very severe. It affects hands and weight-bearing joints such as knees, hips, feet and the back. Doctors of chiropractic, by the nature of their work, can detect the earliest degenerative changes in the joints. They

What Causes the Noise of an Adjustment?

The sound is not coming from the bones themselves.  It is coming from a lubricant called synovial fluid that is found in every joint.  That fluid contains dissolved gasses.  During the adjustment the joints are sightly separated to move into proper position.  This releases the built-up pressure on the fluid and gasses and creates a “pop” sound.  Not all patients “pop” and not all adjusting techniques produce the noise, which means an adjustment can be proper and effective, even if you don’t hear any noise. Are chiropractic adjustments advisable during pregnancy?

Chiropractic adjustments are very safe and a natural method to treat many of the common discomforts of pregnancy. Keeping the spine free of misalignments allows the nerves to communicate to the rest of the body, especially important at a time when many chemical and structural changes are happening.  Keeping the pelvis balanced is important to allow the baby proper position in the uterus.  As the mother’s weight and abdominal size increase, usually so do symptoms of hip or low back pain, headache, heartburn, and shortness of breath, all of which can be helped by chiropractic adjustments. I hear the term subluxation, what is that?

A spinal or vertebral subluxation happens when one or more of the spinal bones move out of position and begin to irritate spinal nerves.  This can be the result of a trauma to the body, stress, bad posture, chemical reactions in the body, or emotional issues.  The resulting spinal subluxation can have an effect on your movement and the nerve impulses to the body.  It can cause an increase in muscle tone and inflammation of the surrounding soft tissues.  All of this eventually leads to degeneration and possibe permanent damage. At Chait Chiropractic Center, Dr. John Chait looks forward to meeting

What is a posture analysis, and why is it important?

A posture analysis shows how you hold your body, or how you position yourself and how your body balances. There are various ways to assess this from using grids and a plumb line to sophisticated computer programs. The mid-line of your body should line up close to the gravity line, both in a front view and a side view. The postural analysis helps the provider determine areas of misalignment and imbalance. This information is very helpful in designing a custom treatment plan. Improper posture impedes with muscle function and normal organ function, puts stress and abnormal wear on joints, increases

How does the traction used in Chiropractic Biophysics work to correct posture?

Along with the adjustments and exercise, the CBP Doctor of Chiropractic will use spinal remodeling, or traction, to gently allow the misaligned areas of the body to return to their normal position. This is done by using prescribed amounts of pressure and time to bring the body part to the opposite of the abnormal posture. There are various tools and devises that are used to traction. Traction is determined on an individual basis and traction will be adjusted as you progress through your treatment plan. Can Children Get Chiropractic Adjustments?

Spinal misalignments can start by the baby’s position in the womb or by going through the birthing process. Learning to sit up, crawl and walk can affect infants and toddlers. As the child continues to grow, traumas from falling, sports injuries, or just stress can cause subluxations. Children can develop problems from carrying a heavy backpack, spending long periods of time playing video games or texting, or poor posture. Correcting spinal misalignments in children can prevent future chronic problems. Chiropractic adjustments for children are very gentle, geared for their size, weight and stage of development of the child. Dr. John

Why Do I Have Neck Pain After Texting?

Does your neck ache after gazing down at your mobile device for a long time? With all the new phones and ipads available let’s keep in mind our ergonomics. Due to the popularity of text messaging with teenagers, the condition is more common in adolescents and young adults, but can be seen in anyone who spends hours looking down at mobile devices. Keeping the neck and head stretched forward for long periods could eventually cause the natural curvature of the neck to reverse, potentially leading to serious health problems. The amount of people suffering from “text neck” is on the

How Long do I Have to Seek Medical Treatment After I Have a Car Accident?

This is information many are not aware of. Under FL PIP (no fault) insurance law, you have up to $10,000 in medical coverage. However, changes made to this law effective January 1, 2013 limit the time frame to get medical treatment to 14 calendar days. This means you have two weeks to get evaluated and at that first visit you need to report any and all areas of pain that result from the accident. If you do not act within this 14 day period you lose this benefit! There are other limitations and restrictions to this law. At Chait Chiropractic

Is My Computer Monitor Causing My Neck Pain?

Yes. The proper monitor height is important in preventing not only neck pain but upper back pain as well as eye strain and possible migraines. The most effective way to determine correct monitor height is to sit correctly in your chair. Position your body and head in a neutral and upright position – your spine should be straight and head centered over your shoulders. Then, align your monitor height so you don’t have to tilt your head up or down to look at it. When looking at the screen, your eyes should be level with the top half of the

Oh, we know you’ve heard that a time or two! Whether it was mom, grandma, or even a teacher, we have all been told to stand up straight. And at that time we may have even been annoyed by the saying, who would’ve thought this could very well be a key factor in good health? How, you ask? Having good posture is extremely beneficial to your neck and spine. When we slouch, the unnecessary strain we are putting on our neck and back can cause neck pain, low back pain, muscle spasms, numbness, headaches and more! Not only that, but
