Good posture is simple and eloquent by design in form and function. The body is designed to have the head, rib cage, and pelvis perfectly balanced upon one another in both the front and side views. If the posture is deviated from the normal, then the spine is also deviated from the normal healthy position. Abnormal posture has been associated with the development and progression of many spinal conditions and injuries including: Increased muscle activity and disc injury, scoliosis, work lifting injuries, sports injuries, back pain, neck pain, headaches, carpal tunnel symptoms, shoulder and ankle injuries as well as many other conditions.

When talking about a car crash have you ever heard anyone say “If there is no damage to the car then there is no injury” Unfortunately, that is not always the case. There are many factors to take into consideration when you have been in a low impact collision. Vehicle design and weight, the angle of the collision, the seat angle, headrest angle and head position upon impact are all important factors. Many injuries happen when a car is traveling as little as 5 mph. Either car may show little or no damage as most bumpers are designed to absorb the
People who sit more are at a greater risk for herniated discs. A muscle called the psoas travels through the abdominal cavity. When this muscle tightens, it pulls the upper lumbar spine forward. This in turn, causes the upper body weight to rest entirely on the ischeal tuberosity (sitting bones) instead of being distributed along the arch of the spine. This also transfers body weight onto the intervertebral disc, which may make the disc more vulnerable to injury by bulging posteriorly. We are educating our local community by teaching parents and children about proper backpack safety so they may reduce possible injury from backpack poor-positioning and over-weighting backpacks, which may drastically change the side view balance of the child’s posture possibly leading to repetitive injury and pain. Our goal is to prevent children from weighting their backpacks with more than 10-15% of their body weight all while encouraging them to use both straps, and using rolling bags and lockers when at all possible. We are doing free backpack and postural assessments for the months of August and September 2019. Please call Chait

The first subluxation usually occurs at birth due to the immense pressure of a baby moving through the birth canal. During this stage, the compression to the spine may cause the baby’s tiny bones to be pushed out of alignment. As children grow, they learn how to sit, crawl, stand up and eventually walk – their spines endure more subluxations. Part of their childhood often includes falls, riding bikes and playing sports thus causing even more subluxations. We are even seeing subluxations caused by text neck and improper backpack posture. All children should have their spines checked for subluxation. Dr.Chait
“The presence of spinal pain in young people has been established as a risk factor for spinal pain later in life”, according to a study published in Pub Med. Recent clinical practice guidelines recommend spinal manipulation, as well as other modalities that are common treatments provided by chiropractors, as interventions for spine pain. The Pub Med study analyzed the data of young people, aged 10-24, from the Mount Carmel Clinic chiropractic program database. The results showed both statistically and clinically significant improvement on the numeric pain rating scale following chiropractic care. In conclusion, this study provides evidence that chiropractic care
Have you ever had your spine checked by a Chiropractor? A Chiropractor can examine you for subluxations in the spine and posture. A subluxation is a partial dislocation or misalignment of the spinal bone resulting in nerve pressure and sometimes pain. There are many causes for subluxations such as a car accident or a fall. Subluxations are more frequently due to long periods of poor posture. Subluxations cannot be corrected with drugs or injections since it is a structural displacement. For example, you wouldn’t get medication or shots to correct crooked or misaligned teeth – you would get braces. A
Ideally the head should sit directly on the neck and shoulders, like a golf ball sits on a tee. The weight of the head is more like a bowling ball than a golf ball, so holding it forward, out of alignment, puts extreme strain on your neck and upper back muscles. The result can be major muscle fatigue. And research now shows that the long term effects of this posture is massive bone spur growth called “horns”. This is a quote from an article published in THE WASHINGTON POST regarding “horn growth” in children. “Horns are growing on young people’s
Did you know that Forward Head Posture (FHP) causes an increase in the the workload for many of the muscles attached to the cervical spine? When posture related muscles are weak or lacking, the vertebrae in the spine can be misaligned. Some of the nerve fibers that run through the spinal column may get pinched and it may cause dysfunction. When this happens, cutting off the circuit to a certain body part or system, may cause them to no longer function optimally. This is why subluxations (misalignment’s) may cause more problems than just pain or symptoms. May is posture correction month! Chait Chiropractic Center would like to invite you in for a complimentary posture analysis. Dr. Chait has been analyzing postures since 1986 to residents

A rear-end collision with a minor or severe impact, may cause major trauma to the spine. According to a Yale University study using live occupants in rear end crash tests, researchers have found that head accelerations may easily reach nine times the force of gravity. This means that the human head-which typically weighs around ten pounds, with sudden force can make the head act as if it were 90 pounds. This may cause the occupant’s torso to be accelerated in one direction, while the head is thrown in the opposite direction. The cervical spine is located between the head and
Most people do not immediately feel the ill effects after sitting with poor posture for a couple of hours. Just imagine what poor posture will do over the course of a week, a month or even a year. The stress that poor posture places on the body can lead to unhealthy anatomical changes in the back, neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips and knees. This pressure can create and flare up back pain through the constriction of the blood vessels and nerves. In addition, the stress from poor posture can lead to back pain by causing problems with the muscles, discs

Many of our patients are subjected to hours upon hours of less than favorable ergonomic postures at work. Many of them sit at their desk, drive for long hours, or engage in repetitive tasks that cause stress and strain. Prolonged stress to any body part or joint can create instability, stress, muscle tightness, nerve irritation and may lead to pain and decreased body function. Many people do not realize the importance of spinal and extremity alignment and do not understand the direct connection of why they are in pain. For example: your job consists of sitting at a desk doing

We discussed the symptoms of Forward Head Posture (FHP) in our previous blog. When there is increased pressure on the shoulders and neck from forward head posture, it may result in the straining of your neck muscles along with decreased blood circulation, pain and fatigue. Some of the causes of Forward Head Posture (FHP) include: Weakness in the neck muscles Injuries, such as neck sprains, strains and whiplash Poor or bad sleeping position. Gardening Carrying heavy backpacks and purses Improper ergonomics when texting, reading, watching television and driving One sided sports such as golf and bowling. Common professions that you
A human head weighs between 8 and 10 pounds on average. With correct posture, your head doesn’t feel like it weighs much at all because it is perfectly balanced and positioned. When Forward Head Posture begins to develop and your head begins to move forward away from its balanced position, the weight of your head begins to increase. In fact for every inch your head moves forward, the relative weight of the head doubles due to the effects of gravity. Some of the common symptoms of forward head posture include: Chronic pain (neck, shoulders, upper, lower and middle back) Temporomandibular joint
Did you know that as your head is misaligned forward from your shoulders, the heavier the weight of your head becomes? At 0 degrees of forward head position, your head weighs about 10-12 pounds? The further forward your head flexes from your shoulders, the heavier the head becomes. By 30 degrees of head flexion, your head weighs 40 pounds. By the time your head is at 60 degrees, it weighs about 60 pounds. This is like holding a small child on your shoulders! The more your head moves forward, it shifts the center of the gravity. This causes the upper spine
Did you know that most people sit about 11 hours on average per day? We sit at mealtime, in the car, in meetings, at our PC, both at work and home, watching television, and then it is time for bed. It all adds up to muscle weakness, where the body cannot hold up the posture properly. This may lead to sitting forward with poor posture and a rounded spine. This posture is commonly referred to as the “computer slump.” Although the human spine is a versatile and magnificent structure, after a few decades of “computer slump”, the muscles finally run
It is that time of year again – Back to School! Have you seen how heavy some of the backpacks are that the kids are carrying around the school yard? Backpacks come in all shapes, colors and sizes. They help kids of all ages express their own personal sense of style and when used properly, they are incredibly handy. The problem is that poor-positioning and over weight backpacks can drastically change the posture. As practical as backpacks are, they can strain muscles and joints and may cause back pain if they’re too heavy or used incorrectly. Some helpful hints: Choose backpacks with

It is easier to observe “poor” posture in others because we are unlikely to be aware of our own habitual body positions. When you see someone bent over with severely rounded shoulders, or with one shoulder higher than the other, you are probably observing a condition that has developed over a period of years. Postural problems can be due to hereditary or can be disease related, but most often they are habitual in nature. Identifying the factors that contribute to these postural imbalances may help you see which areas need to be addressed and changed. Be aware of occupational influences,
When most people hear the term posture, they recall being told to stand or sit up straight by their mother or teachers since they were kids. Posture comes from the Latin word ponere, meaning to place. It’s defined as the position of the body or a way of holding the body. The important thing to realize about postural problems is that they can lessen the quality of your life as you age. Your posture affects you more than you may realize. Since all of your soft tissue is interconnected (muscles, tendons, ligaments, and connective tissue.), a problem in one area of your
“Lift with your legs, not with your back” is a phrase commonly used when discussing the body mechanics of lifting. Lifting with your legs means you are using the power of your lower body to lift the weight. Instead of bending from your back and putting strain on your spine and upper body, bend from your hip joints and knees, and use the power of your legs. When lifting, it is very important that you get as close to the weight as possible, without losing your own stability. When you stand away from the weight, your back must bend and
Sitting is believed to cause the majority of back pain in this country. 54% of back pain is caused from sitting, as opposed to standing. This is due to the fact that people tend to sit in a slouched or slumped position for hours at a time, increasing the pressure on their lower back. Overall there is an increased risk of pain and stress to the lower and upper back as well as the neck. Sitting with your upper body vertically balanced over your pelvis allows your low back to maintain its lumbar curve, which will decrease the pressure from flexing
The way you use your body will influence your physical health. Whether you are sitting or standing; pushing or pulling; or lifting and holding something. For instance, just keeping a wallet in your back pocket can misalign your spine because of the way it changes your body mechanics when you sit. Body positions are so important to your health. A perfect example is the strain that you put on your back, neck and shoulders when you look down when standing. The next time you are doing dishes, try to look straight ahead instead of down and see what a difference
Body awareness is where it all starts. Without it, we blindly go through our day not realizing how our movements, responses, sensations and feelings affect our health. Body awareness is a mindfulness of your body’s movements, responses, sensations or consciousness of your body. It is when you become aware of subtle patterns, for example, the position of your shoulders while you read, or the shifting of your weight when you stand. Once you become aware of your body and your habits of movement, you can begin to discover which movement habits serve you and which ones hinder and cause you discomfort,
Standing is a basic and foundational position from which all other body mechanics are performed. Your body must continue to move or “sway” in varying degrees in order to keep itself in balance….so don’t fight it’s natural movement. Trying to stand “straight” takes your skeleton out of its natural alignment, requiring your muscles to work very hard to hold a straight posture. The next time you feel yourself trying to stand “straight”, relax and allow the natural shape of your skeleton to support you. Whether you stand with your feet parallel to each other or with one foot forward, your

A study was performed on 46 children under the age of 5 to determine if ear infections improved while under chiropractic care. All treatments were done by a single chiropractor, who adjusted the misalignments found paying particular attention to the cervical vertebrae. “Improvement was based on parental decision (they stated that the child had no fever, no signs of ear pain, and was totally asymptomatic), and/or the child seemed to be asymptomatic to the treating DC and/or the parent stated that the child’s MD judged the child to be improved.” The results were that 93% of all episodes improved, 75%

Chronic pain such as from arthritis, sciatica or recurring migraines negatively impacts many areas of our daily life. Traditional medicine usually chooses to treat pain with prescription medications. Treating this pain with medication only treats the pain. It does not resolve the root cause of the condition. Do you know that this has led to a record number of people becoming addicted to pain medications? Prescription drug abuse and addiction have become a significant problem in the United States. Researchers estimate that as many as 2.1 million people in the United States abuse opioids. The Center for Disease Control and

There are three phases of chiropractic care .

So you are experiencing back pain. What can you do at home to relieve the pain? Lie on a rug or padded floor. If you can not get down to that low a hard bed will suffice. Support your neck with a small pillow or rolled up towel. Place another pillow under your knees.. Place an ice back on the floor under the area that is hurting. Relax as best as possible for 20 minutes. Wait an hour and repeat as often as needed to help with the inflammation. Symptoms that indicate you may need to see a chiropractor: 1.
Do you know that that there are many people under the impression that they are lifting correctly? Many of them are in disbelief when they injure their back during a “simple” lift. Even after getting a back injury from lifting, you will hear people comment, “but I bent my knees!” At Chait Chiropractic Center we know there is more to safe lifting than just bending the knees. Here are five steps to safe lifting. 1. Get a firm footing, with your feet apart for a stable stance. Stand close to load. Squat (don’t bend waist). Take a deep breath and tighten stomach
You may need a new pillow if you are sleeping on your back on a flat pillow that is made from feathers or foam. Why? Feather pillows tend to bunch up as you sleep and may lose the support of your head and neck. Flat foam pillows tend not to have the proper shape that supports your neck. Some foam pillows are molded better than others. Your pillow should have a neck roll that supports your neck and allows your head to drop back into extension. This type of pillow is called a cervical pillow. If you sleep on your
May is Correct Posture Month. At Chait Chiropractic Center we encourage people to think about how their posture can affect their overall health. Posture refers to the position in which someone holds their body when standing or sitting. Abnormal posture can negatively affect your health in the form of pain and symptoms. Back pain is the most common complaint of poor posture. In fact, statistics from the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) reveal that at least 31 million Americans experience lower back pain at any given time. A good way of checking your posture is to view it from the front and from

According to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, over six million Americans suffer from scoliosis. Scoliosis is a condition which is defined as an abnormal sideways curvature of the spine. This spinal deformity can result in discomfort, pain and other health issues. Dr. Deed Harrison, Chiropractic BioPhysics® co-founder and clinical director at the Ideal Spine Health Center stated “Whereas before scoliosis treatment was a bit vague and yielded no significant results, today we are proud to introduce patients to a viable and highly effective solution to correct spinal deformities with great precision and unsurpassed results, giving scoliosis sufferers great hope
How many hours a day do you spend sitting versus standing? How many hours does your child spend sitting? If you sit, drive or watch TV for more than 2 hours a day you could be at risk for back pain. Sitting can put up to 2 times the stress on the spine as standing does. Slouching when sitting, increases that pressure even more. Movement is important throughout the day as disks in the spine act as shock absorbers in the body. If the body remains still, these disks do not receive the proper nutrition they need which may lead to tightness and pain.
Look around! Everyone, everywhere can be seen texting. The distinct posture of tilting the head forward forces the neck muscles, tendons, and ligaments to strain to hold the head up has been labeled as “text neck”. The most common symptoms of “text neck” are neck pain, stiffness and soreness. In addition, looking down at your cell phone too much each day can lead to shoulder pain and tightness, muscle spasm, and upper back pain ranging from nagging to chronic pain. A new study published in the Surgical Technology International suggests that looking down at a cell phone is the equivalent
Tis the season for the holidays, food, family and cheer! And for many a stressful time of year. While there is so much to be grateful for, it is also easy to get wrapped up in everything and forget to take care of your own health. Everyone knows the holidays can be stressful: Dealing with family members you disagree with, finding money to pay for gifts, traveling and being stuck in airports or being alone if you have lost loved ones. Everybody has a different reasons but the end result is the same. Your body deals with stress by tensing
Do you suffer from mild to severe pain? If so, do you turn to pain relievers? Did you know that pain medication is not the best choice? It is easy for us to say that chiropractic care is better than pain pills and you may be wondering why. Where is the proof? First pain medication does not fix a problem. It provides relief, but only short-term relief. Pain medication only masks the problem. As soon as your pain pills wear off, the pain is likely to return. Chiropractors treat the source of the problem. We don’t want to mask the

Millions of people are sitting in a position that can cause chronic back and neck pain complicated by a forward head posture than can lead to degenerative conditions of the spine. Taking steps to improve your posture and proper ergonomic chair design will help you improve your back’s health. An ergonomic chair, when used properly, can help one maximize back support and maintain good posture while sitting. No matter how comfortable one may be in a chair, prolonged sitting in one position is not good for the back

human head weighs around 10-11 pounds on average. When you have correct posture, your head doesn’t feel like it weighs much at all because it is perfectly balanced and positioned. When Forward Head Posture begins to develop and your head begins to move forward away from its ideal postural position, the weight of your head begins to increase. For every inch the head moves forward of the shoulders, the weight of the head doubles due to the effects of gravity. This means that there are some individuals are walking around with a head that weighs between 50 to 75 lbs.!
Just as no two people are alike, no two spines are alike! In fact, spines can vary greatly from one to the another. For example, although anatomists tell us that there are five lumbar (lower back) vertebrae, some people have four and others have six! Similar variations occur with the number of thoracic (mid back) and cervical (neck) vertebrae. There are also many variations in the spine’s shape, curve, muscles, ligaments, nerve and blood supply. Thus our spines are as unique as our faces. Although many spinal variations are congenital ( we are born with them.) others are acquired through
Scoliosis can be a difficult condition and cause both physical pain and emotional suffering. The sideways bending of the spine may begin with abnormal posture and it can end in deformity. If not treated it can progress and effect your heart, lungs and many other organs. The good news is that there can be help for people that suffer with scoliosis. Scoliosis can occur from age 8 – 18 and occurs more often in females. Some people are born with this spinal condition. Others get it from bad posture, carrying backpacks, uneven leg length and different injuries. In many cases
“Stand up straight!” is probably what your mother used to say to you when you were young. While the intention of encouraging proper posture is good, our spines are actually not supposed to be straight looking at it from the side. Your spine has natural curves that form an elongated S-shape from the side. The spinal curves work like a spring to absorb shock, maintain balance, and to facilitate the full range of motion throughout the spinal column. Maintaining your spine’s shape depends on proper posture. The shape of the spine and posture indicates the health of the spine. Obtaining
An automobile need not be severely damaged for the person inside to sustain serious injuries . Even a fender bender can have serious physical consequences and it is not unusual for someone who gets into a car accident with just a few bruises to assume they are not injured. The damage may not be immediately apparent but even if the accident seemed minor it is important to make an appointment to get checked out by a CBP chiropractor to make sure there has been no injury to the musculoskeletal system. One of the most common injuries in an auto accident
We all know the last thing anyone needs is to be in a car accident. Where to seek treatment is one of the biggest decisions we face along with why you should consider CBP chiropractic care for help with your injuries. Pain after a car accident is a good indication of an injury. If there’s any chance that severe or life threatening injuries are involved, you should first go to an emergency room to rule those out. If the hospital clears you of serious injuries but you are still experiencing pain, seeing a CBP chiropractor should be your next step.
Today millions of Americans are in less pain, are more mobile and have improved health because of treatment received by a Doctor of Chiropractic. As good as it is, Chiropractic care evolves and improves based on continuous advances in science and technology. At Chait Chiropractic Center we offer the Chiropractic BioPhysics technique. Chiropractic BioPhysics (CBP) is a chiropractic technique developed and studied, starting in the 1970s, by Donald D. Harrison, PhD, DC. In December 1980 the CBP Technique was originally named by Drs. Donald Harrison, Deanne Harrison, and Daniel Murphy for “physics applied to biology in chiropractic”. Since that time
There are many benefits to adding therapeutic massage therapy to your chiropractic treatment plan to help with chronic pain. Massage can help decrease pain, increase the speed of recovery and help you stay in alignment after a chiropractic adjustment. Massage also helps chiropractic care by acting like a “warm-up” for the body prior to the adjustment. Adjustments can last longer when muscle tension is released since tight muscles pull joints out of alignment. It is like a circle in which chiropractic adjustments address misalignments which gives immediate relief to the soft tissue and massage helps soft tissue heal quicker once
Sometimes I hear people say “If I am over 60 years old am I too old for chiropractic treatment?” Many people over 60 years old are unaware of the benefits that chiropractic has to offer such as pain relief, better range of motion and flexibility in their spine and extremities, improving balance and coordination and decreased joint degeneration from wear and tear. Chiropractic adjustments help to increase your health and well-being, it helps you to sleep better, gives you much better energy which allows you to play with your grandkids because you can get on the floor with them and
Yes. The proper monitor height is important in preventing not only neck pain but upper back pain as well as eye strain and possible migraines. The most effective way to determine correct monitor height is to sit correctly in your chair. Position your body and head in a neutral and upright position – your spine should be straight and head centered over your shoulders. Then, align your monitor height so you don’t have to tilt your head up or down to look at it. When looking at the screen, your eyes should be level with the top half of the
Chiropractic works best when the patient takes charge of their own health care. Part of that responsibility includes a reasonably consistent routine of strengthening and stretching in addition to cardiovascular exercise and proper nutrition. While aerobic exercise, such as walking, running or swimming, has many excellent health benefits it does not make your muscles strong. Strength training does. By strength training with weights you’re using your muscles to work against the extra pounds, called resistance. This strengthens and increases the amount of muscle mass in your body by making your muscles work harder than they are used to. Strength training also

Most people suffering from neck pain have compaints of headaches and migranes, constantly feeling tired, trouble sleeping at nights, notice a gradual decline in their overall health, see a dramatic change in their emotional well-being and no longer enjoy the things that they once looked forward to doing. Neck pain can be a direct result of misalignments in your cervical spine, which can be caused by any number of reasons such as poor posture, falls, playing sports, automobile or workplace accidents. Neck pain can contribute to a wide range of health problems, which if left untreated, can create bodily dysfunction.
Aging is a natural process that does not happen all at once but occurs as an individual goes through life. As we mature in age, we are prone to change our posture. Some common causes that attribute to this are: trauma, computer ergonomics, backpacks, mobile devices, television and even the way we sleep! When a person is not positioned correctly, they are at a greater risk for developing postural abnormalities that can negatively impact their activities of daily living as well as other bodily functions and mobility. The best ways to keep your body in its optimal shape is usually
When most people think of chiropractic adjustments, they think of back or neck pain. The chiropractic approach is based on the principle that the body has a natural ability to heal itself. This natural healing is initiated and controlled by the nervous system. These nerve impulses flow down from the brain to your spinal cord and out through spinal nerves to your muscles, tendons, ligaments and vital organs. Interference within the nervous system due to spinal joint misalignment leads to pain, symptoms and possibly loss of function. The upper cervical adjustment is an adjustment on the top of the neck.
One of the essential pieces of any back to school ensemble is, of course, the backpack. Although they’re practical, backpacks are a leading cause of back and shoulder pain for millions of children and adolescents. With books in tow, backpacks can weigh up top an alarming 30-40 pounds! This forces the head into a forward head posture to counter balance the weight resulting in abnormal stress on the joints, discs and nerves of the neck, shoulders and low back. The American Chiropractic Association recommends that parents help children pack their backpacks properly, and they should make sure children never carry
The central nervous system is made up of the brain, spinal cord and is protected by 24 movable bones called vertebrae. Coming out of the spinal cord is a network of nerves which then travel through spaces between the adjacent vertebrae to control and communicate with all muscles, blood vessels, organs and other tissues of the body. When two adjacent vertebrae become misaligned, the space between the vertebrae becomes constricted causing a decrease in the electrical impulses that flow through the nerve due to the vertebral misalignment. The 24 moveable bones in the spinal column are divided into three sections

A pinched nerve is actually rare. It is more likely that a spinal bone will misalign and irritate, stretch, rub or chaff a nearby nerve root. These “subluxations” may distort the critical nerve messages to and from the brain. Because the nerves control and coordinate the functions of the muscles and internal organs, pinched nerves can lead to other health problems. Some of the symptoms of Subluxations are: •Neck pain • Headaches •Spinal pain •Mid or lower back pain •Shoulder pain •Pain radiating down their arm or leg •Numbness, tingling, or burning sensation in the arms, legs, or even toes
The short answer is No. Some people may be able to make their joints “pop,” but that is not an adjustment! Manipulating vertebrae that are already too mobile doesn’t do a thing for the pressure on your nerves caused by Subluxation and in fact may do damage to the joints and the spinal curves. However the vertebrae that are fixated or jammed (hypomobile) aren’t affected by “self-adjustment” demonstrations. Unfortunately, these are the ones that are in need of the adjustment. So yes, it is possible to “crack” yourself but as a rule it is not possible to give yourself an
Here are some Great Ergonomic Keyboard/Mouse Tips to make sure your PC does not win the battle! The keyboard should be placed just above the level of your lap. This is lower than most people normally place their keyboard. Let your arms tilt downward while using the keyboard and leave your elbows at a comfortable “open” angle. If you don’t have an adjustable keyboard tray, you may need to accomplish this by adjusting your chair height. Using a slightly negative keyboard tilt will help you keep your wrists in the proper (neutral) postion. Try to avoid positive keyboard tilt (i.e.,
Headache is a frequent complaint that we see daily in our office. One estimate is that headaches occur in 9 out of 10 people. Some are mild but annoying, localized pain that may be attributed to one or more of a variety of causes. The pain can stem from stress, injuries, poor posture, or just everyday activities. Dr. John Chait has helped a lot of patients in Sarasota recover from chronic headaches, and we can quite possibly help you too. Chronic, recurring headaches, which can be the most serious, are of two major types — migraine and tension. These may
While diet, stress, smoking, caffeine intake, and certain drugs all contribute to acid reflux recent studies suggest that lumbar kyphosis – or the abnormal curvature of the spine – combined with back muscle weakness, can have a “significant effect” on the presence of the disease. Furthermore, increased thoracic–mid back- curvature called hyper-kyphosis has also been found to cause and / or contribute to the signs and symptoms of acid reflux. Have you ever slept on your arm or sat on your leg ? When you stood up your leg or hand was tingling and it felt all tingly or stopped
Joint disease is one of the oldest, and most common types of arthritis. It is characterized by the breakdown of the joint’s cartilage. Cartilage is the part of the joint that cushions the ends of bones. Cartilage breakdown causes bones to rub against each other, causing pain and loss of movement. Most commonly affecting middle-aged and older people, osteoarthritis can range from very mild to very severe. It affects hands and weight-bearing joints such as knees, hips, feet and the back. Doctors of chiropractic, by the nature of their work, can detect the earliest degenerative changes in the joints. They
Text neck. Yes, you read that right. Text neck. Who would have thought that cellphones could create such a common neck pain that it has its own term. Just take a walk in downtown Sarasota or sit at at one of the many fine restaurants in St Armands Circle and you can see the epidemic of cellphone usage. This term describes what is more appropriately called by the medical community and chiropractors as neck strain and is typically from the overuse of neck muscles during certain activity, including using your cellphone, smartphone or mobile device. While the use and technology

Mobility is the key to being healthy and happy. We want to make sure we improve your range of motion so you can live life to the fullest. Range of motion is how far the person’s joints can be moved in different directions. Injury, lack of movement, incorrect posture, obesity, aging and spinal issues may impair your range of motion and flexibility. Many people visit us with common problems like neck pain, back pain and joint

The sound is not coming from the bones themselves. It is coming from a lubricant called synovial fluid that is found in every joint. That fluid contains dissolved gasses. During the adjustment the joints are sightly separated to move into proper position. This releases the built-up pressure on the fluid and gasses and creates a “pop” sound. Not all patients “pop” and not all adjusting techniques produce the noise, which means an adjustment can be proper and effective, even if you don’t hear any noise. Chiropractic adjustments are very safe and a natural method to treat many of the common discomforts of pregnancy. Keeping the spine free of misalignments allows the nerves to communicate to the rest of the body, especially important at a time when many chemical and structural changes are happening. Keeping the pelvis balanced is important to allow the baby proper position in the uterus. As the mother’s weight and abdominal size increase, usually so do symptoms of hip or low back pain, headache, heartburn, and shortness of breath, all of which can be helped by chiropractic adjustments. A spinal or vertebral subluxation happens when one or more of the spinal bones move out of position and begin to irritate spinal nerves. This can be the result of a trauma to the body, stress, bad posture, chemical reactions in the body, or emotional issues. The resulting spinal subluxation can have an effect on your movement and the nerve impulses to the body. It can cause an increase in muscle tone and inflammation of the surrounding soft tissues. All of this eventually leads to degeneration and possibe permanent damage. At Chait Chiropractic Center, Dr. John Chait looks forward to meeting
Proper posture and correct spinal curvature play an important part in your overall health. Spinal remodeling is another name for a gentle traction used in Chiropractic BioPhysics (CBP) to correct and restore proper posture. Adjustments, postural exercises and spinal remodeling may be used in various combinations in your CBP treatment. Under a chiropractor’s professional guidance, correction of improper spinal curvature in the cervical, thoracic and lumbar regions can be performed easily at home. Patients will receive faster results which translates to less pain, more flexibility and improved function. The denneroll orthothic is only one example of the the tractions used by a
A posture analysis shows how you hold your body, or how you position yourself and how your body balances. There are various ways to assess this from using grids and a plumb line to sophisticated computer programs. The mid-line of your body should line up close to the gravity line, both in a front view and a side view. The postural analysis helps the provider determine areas of misalignment and imbalance. This information is very helpful in designing a custom treatment plan. Improper posture impedes with muscle function and normal organ function, puts stress and abnormal wear on joints, increases
Along with the adjustments and exercise, the CBP Doctor of Chiropractic will use spinal remodeling, or traction, to gently allow the misaligned areas of the body to return to their normal position. This is done by using prescribed amounts of pressure and time to bring the body part to the opposite of the abnormal posture. There are various tools and devises that are used to traction. Traction is determined on an individual basis and traction will be adjusted as you progress through your treatment plan. Dr. John Chait at Chait Chiropractic Center has been trained in Chiropractic Biophysics. He looks

Chiropractic Biophysics (CBP) technique is an advanced treatment to correct posture with proven results. Beginning with a thorough posture analysis and examination of spinal alignment, the doctor develops a treatment plan that is personalized to each individual. Using adjustments, postural exercise and corrective traction, the body tissues are allowed to gently return to the normal position. These treatments build on the previous treatment so they do require a commitment to a prescribed corrective regimen. How frequent and how long the correction will take depends on many factors but usually with a three month period you will see measurable improvements that
The technique works by using adjustments, exercise, and corrective traction to mirror the amount of misalignment of the joints and surrounding soft tissues. This places the area affected in the exact opposite of the displacement and allows those tissues to be re-educated to maintain correct posture. A CBP trained Chiropractor will determine which of the many options available is right for your treatment plan. Dr. John Chait at Chait Chiropractic Center is a Certified CBP Doctor of Chiropractic and has successfully treated patients for more than 20 years. By simple definition, it is an inflammation of a joint. There are over 100 forms of arthritis, but the most common form is called osteoarthritis. This is a degenerative process where the cartilage and bone wear away. This “wear and tear” can be caused by trauma, infection, or aging. Symptoms are usually pain, stiffness, and swelling. Chiropractic adjustments can correct misalignments and relieve pressure on nerves allowing the body to heal. Chiropractic BioPhysics helps correct the posture so the vertebrae and/or bone will stop wearing away. Call Dr. Chait today to start correcting your posture to avoid age related diseases

Spinal misalignments can start by the baby’s position in the womb or by going through the birthing process. Learning to sit up, crawl and walk can affect infants and toddlers. As the child continues to grow, traumas from falling, sports injuries, or just stress can cause subluxations. Children can develop problems from carrying a heavy backpack, spending long periods of time playing video games or texting, or poor posture. Correcting spinal misalignments in children can prevent future chronic problems. Chiropractic adjustments for children are very gentle, geared for their size, weight and stage of development of the child. Dr. John
Does your neck ache after gazing down at your mobile device for a long time? With all the new phones and ipads available let’s keep in mind our ergonomics. Due to the popularity of text messaging with teenagers, the condition is more common in adolescents and young adults, but can be seen in anyone who spends hours looking down at mobile devices. Keeping the neck and head stretched forward for long periods could eventually cause the natural curvature of the neck to reverse, potentially leading to serious health problems. The amount of people suffering from “text neck” is on the
This is information many are not aware of. Under FL PIP (no fault) insurance law, you have up to $10,000 in medical coverage. However, changes made to this law effective January 1, 2013 limit the time frame to get medical treatment to 14 calendar days. This means you have two weeks to get evaluated and at that first visit you need to report any and all areas of pain that result from the accident. If you do not act within this 14 day period you lose this benefit! There are other limitations and restrictions to this law. At Chait Chiropractic

These specialized spinal evaluations take only a few minutes and can be performed without any pain or discomfort. Chait Chiropractic offers such evaluations to your business, community event, or school at no charge. The key to spinal health lies in the proper evaluation of people’s posture to gravity. Posture is the window to the spine and nervous system, and the nervous system controls every single function in our body. If our posture is abnormal, our nervous system can’t be working properly and loss of function may be experienced in the body. Some dysfunctions are more obvious than others, but our

When I first came to see Dr. John, I could hardly move without feeling extreme pain in my lower back and the back of my legs and feet, and then the pain would shoot up into my neck. I think the pain came from many different falls though out my life. Some falls in high school during gym activities and a couple of falls on concrete at a wastewater treatment plant. The symptoms improved slowly once I began seeing Dr. John. It took time because we had to correct my spine, which takes time. My body had a lifetime of

In 1998, I was in an automobile accident that had me in a wheelchair because I was unable to walk. I also had paralysis on my right side because of a brain injury from the accident. I started seeing Dr. John in March of 1999. Now I am walking and enjoying life. I come in to see Dr. John twice a week for adjustments and cervical traction. I also workout six days a week at the gym. My life is coming back to a bright future and it’s all because of Dr. John. The traction is for my brain stem.
In mid-January of this year I began experiencing extreme weakness in my left leg and arm. What started as weakness quickly progressed to an involuntary closing of my left hand. These episodes began occurring several times throughout the day. When I began treatment at Chait Chiropractic I was taking three pills each day to control my symptoms. I have slowly weaned myself off of the medication going from three pills to two pills to one pill to half a pill. It’s now been almost a month of no pills and no symptoms! The knowledge I received from Dr. John has
When I first came to see Dr. John, I had chronic pain and stiffness in my neck and upper back. The pain and numbness had moved into my arm. Flexibility and motion are improving. I am also less fatigued by routine activities. I feel a total life and health improvement from what I have learned of the importance of maintaining a healthy spine. A healthy housing for our
Oh, we know you’ve heard that a time or two! Whether it was mom, grandma, or even a teacher, we have all been told to stand up straight. And at that time we may have even been annoyed by the saying, who would’ve thought this could very well be a key factor in good health? How, you ask? Having good posture is extremely beneficial to your neck and spine. When we slouch, the unnecessary strain we are putting on our neck and back can cause neck pain, low back pain, muscle spasms, numbness, headaches and more! Not only that, but
